To Beat the Grading Blues

A colleague from the Bio department sent me this audio file of a real student calling the Bio department's office to complain about her grade. She never left her name.

What many of my colleagues will find amusing in this message is the phrase: "I studied all night long." Many students will find themselves bewildered by this. Why? There's the rub. I think what students count as "studying hard" is completely mismatched with faculty expectations of "studying hard."

Of course, the most disturbing aspect of this disgruntled student's complaint is her sense that paying a lot of money should entitle her to a good grade.
